Bunion Surgery

What is Bunion Surgery

Bunion Surgery also referred to as Hallux Valgus Surgery is the only means of correcting a bunion.

Surgery is recommended when conservative measures fail to treat the symptoms of bunion, or when the bunion leads to deformities of the adjacent toes. There are many surgical options to treat a bunion. The common goal is to realign the bones in the foot and correct underlying anatomical deformities that cause bunions.

Types of Bunion Surgery

Bunion surgery usually requires a combination of soft tissue and bony intervention. Soft tissue steps involve releasing of tightened or contracted tendons and ligaments that are contributing to the bunion deformity. Bony surgery involves osteotomy (cutting and realigning bone) to correct anatomy to normal ranges as it is this anatomical deformity that contributes to development of the bunion. There are a wide variety of osteotomies that are used for bunion surgery. As all bunions are not the same, your surgeon will discuss the exact procedure that may be required for you after assessing your foot and your x-rays.
