Knee Cartilage Repair

What is Knee Cartilage Repair?

Normal joint surface cartilage has minimal capacity to repair itself. Cartilage injuries may occur gradually over time from ageing related wear, or suddenly following an injury to the knee. Untreated cartilage injuries can lead to early onset arthritis. Symptoms of cartilage injury include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Painful Clicking
  • Locking and
  • Limited Movement

Non-operative treatment may suitably improve your symptoms enough to avoid surgery.

Surgeries that may be suitable to treat your cartilage injury include:

  • Cartilage lesion repair
  • Cartilage lesion debridement (chondroplasty)
  • Chondroplasty + microfracture
  • Cartilage transfer (autograft or allograft)
  • Knee alignment surgery or joint replacement (for more widespread cartilage damage)

Your doctor will discuss the treatment options suitable for you after your visit and assessment.
