Dr Jason Chinnappa is a specialist orthopaedic surgeon focused on management of adult and paediatric patients with problems affecting their hips & knees. Jason also manages lower limb deformities including foot and ankle problems for children, and adults with neuromuscular conditions.


Jason completed his orthopaedic training in NSW, Australia. He has since undertaken subspecialty adult Hip & Knee as well as Foot & Ankle surgery fellowships in Sydney, Australia before moving to Paris, France to complete a fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery. Jason is a co-founder of Sydney Orthopaedic And Sports Injury Service (SOASIS) and part of the Sydney Orthopaedic Specialists (SOS) group. Jason is an active member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and the Australian Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (APOS), including currently serving as the treasurer of APOS.


Career

Jason grew up in Sydney, finishing his schooling at James Ruse Agricultural High School before moving to Melbourne for medical school at Monash University. Upon graduating with his medical degree, he returned to Sydney to work as a junior doctor and also studied part time at Sydney University to complete a Master of Surgery (Orthopaedics) postgraduate degree. After selection onto the Australian Orthopaedic Association Surgical Education and Training program, he rotated through various metropolitan (Prince of Wales Hospital, St. George Hospital, Sutherland Hospital, Concord Repatriation General Hospital, The Canberra Hospital, Sydney Children’s Hospital and Sydney Hospital Hand Surgery Unit) and regional hospitals (The Wollongong Hospital, Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and Port Macquarie Base Hospital) in New South Wales to complete his orthopaedic surgical training and was awarded his Fellowship by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.


Jason has undertaken further subspecialty training:

-      Hip & Knee Arthroplasty/Reconstruction Fellowship with Dr. Michael Solomon, Sydney, Australia

Learning from Dr. Michael Solomon, one of Australia’s premier high-volume hip and knee joint replacement (arthroplasty) surgeons allowed Jason to further hone his skills in primary and revision hip replacement surgery (Anterior and Posterior approaches), primary and revision total and partial knee replacement surgeries, knee arthroscopy and reconstruction of meniscal and ligament injuries. Jason also learnt the Periacetabular Osteotomy hip preservation surgery and is one of the few surgeons in Sydney trained in and performing this highly specialised procedure.


-      Foot & Ankle Reconstruction Fellowship with Dr. David Lunz, Sydney, Australia

Jason spent time working under Dr. David Lunz, the president of the AOA Foot and Ankle society, developing skills in treating foot trauma, sports injuries and deformities.


-      Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowship at Hôpital Universitaire Robert Debré, Paris, France

Having always wanted to treat patients of all ages, Jason spent additional time developing further skills in paediatric orthopaedic surgery. Jason moved to Paris, France to complete an international fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery at Hôpital Universitaire Robert Debré, one of France’s biggest paediatric and maternity hospitals. His time there in one of the busiest paediatric units in Europe allowed him to gain skills in treating children with congenital and developmental deformities of the lower limb, cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular developmental disorders, developmental hip dysplasia and slipped capital femoral epiphysis. His time in France also gave him valuable skills in appreciating pastries, breads, cheeses and wines!

Jason has now returned to his hometown of Sydney to begin treating children and adults for their hip, knee, and lower limb problems.


Research & Education

Jason believes research is important in improving future medical care as well as validating and assessing our current procedures and treatments. He has presented locally and internationally at orthopaedic conferences and is a conjoint lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of New South Wales. Jason is a regular peer reviewer for the Journal of Arthroplasty. A list of his published research works can be found here. Interests Outside Work

Outside work Jason enjoys spending time with his young family, travelling, cooking, playing football, watching sports- football (Real Madrid, Sydney FC and Socceroos fan), basketball (Luka Doncic fan), NRL (St. George Illawarra Dragons fan), rugby (Wallabies fan), playing video games and reading fiction.


Other than English, he can speak French and Coorgi/Kodava thakk (South Indian dialect similar to Kannada).
